High hopes in 2017

A big milestone for the Club as we move Into our tenth year. We still attract new members with our website being an important tool for people seeking to play locally. The flexibility of the on-line booking system is also attractive these when recruiting new members.

Having had our third court plans approved in July 2016, there was much preparatory work done to get the plans in a position for us to send out to builders for tender. This took place but during the year but estimates were much higher than anticipated and so we had to consider alternative means of construction.

Our monthly leagues continued to be well supported and our Teams delivered some success throughout the 2016-17 season.

Club's 2017 AGM

Our 2017 Annual General Meeting took place on Wednesday, 24 May at 7.30 pm in the Sports Club.

It was an opportunity for all members to influence the way in which the Club moves forward -
* we elected our Officers of the Club,
* established the level of subscription and court light fees for next year,
* and heard how our plans for a Third Court are progressing.

Thanks to those who attended, in giving support to the Club.

Some highlights from 2017 ...

A Fast & Furious Success

Thanks to our Organisers, Mark & Hannah - another super effort.

Winner of the Main Event, and retaining the Trophy, was Jonathan Davies with Darren Lee the Runner-up.

Third Court - soil tests done

We were grateful to Club Member, Andy Morris who braved the freezing temperatures to prepare four test holes for a structural engineer to examine on 27 January.

A number of factors depend on the outcome of these tests, some of which were then be incorporated into our plans, prior to tender for the building works being sought.

Welsh Masters Weekend

Four players from the Club entered the 2017 Welsh Master Closed Championships over the weekend 3-5 February in Cardiff:-
Darren Lee, Neil Rawlings, John Ashton and Mark Davies.

HOW DID THEY DO:-
John Ashton (seeded 2) beat No 1 seed, Nick Dyer 3/1 to win the Mens Over 45 title.
In the same category, Neil Rawlings lost in the Semi Finals to the No 1 seed.
Darren Lee lost to the No 1 seed in the Over 40s.
Mark Davies lost in the Semi Finals to the No 1 seed in the Over 55 group.

Congratulations to all players on some excellent results.

2017 National Squash Championships

The 2017 British National Squash Championships were held at The National Squash Centre, Manchester (7 - 12 February) and our local favourite, Tesni Evans (World Ranked 20), was one of the top seeds.

Tesni went on to lose a very tough Quarter Final match, 11/9 in the fifth to the No 2 seed, Alison Waters.

Congratulations to Nick Matthew and Laura Massaro who retined their titles and, between them, now share an amazing 13 national championships.

It's a test hole, Andy ...

... but not as we know it !
Our structural engineer advised us he needed test holes deeper and wider than when Andy Morris took time to help us with the first set, so we had to call in the big guns, with John Williams and his JCB answering the call.

The difficult soil composition proved a challenge even for the JCB but it still managed to get down to 2m for one of the three holes required. We hope that the engineer will now have sufficient information for the plans to proceed to tender very soon !

Third Court proposals on show

Members were invited to view proposals for a Third Court at the Club, on 23 February; we were seeking a critical appraisal of the plans before they are finalised and put out to tender.

This is an important phase in the Squash Club's history and, as such, it was a disappointing turnout by members; however, those present were very supportive of what is being planned.

Jack & Neil play for North Wales

On 25 February, two Club players represented North Wales in a Senior Inter Counties competition with Derbyshire and Cumbria at Derby.

Congratulations to Jack Hayes and Neil Rawlings on their selection; the other Team members were Emyr Evans, George Thomas and Ben Murphy with Mark Davies (Team Manager).

Light card fees have been held again at £3-00 per 45 minute court session.

... and STILL Champion ...

The 2017 Club Championships were concluded on 3 June with some superb squash from all of those who took part.

There was a familiar look to two of the matches this year. First, in a repeat of last years match for Third / Fourth Place, Darren Lee and Rob Evans battled hard but Rob came through to win 11-6, 11-9, 11-8.

Next up was the Plate Final with Ricky Williams and Paul Edwards - this could have gone either way but Paul finished strong to win 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6.

Another familiar pairing was in the Championship Final with defending Champion, Jonathan Davies again up against last year's Runner-up, John Ashton.
JD went out hard and proved too strong going through to retain the Championship: 11-1, 11-4, 11-9.

Congratulations to all of our finalists on their excellent standards.

Challenge is postponed

Our new event this year, the Condition Game Challenge, had to be postponed, with apologies to those who had entered.

This was due to a number of clashes and non-availability of members, but it will be re-scheduled.

Major refurbishment planned for October

From Wednesday, 25 October, both courts were closed for a major refurbishment that included new lighting units, extractor fans and flooring.

This was the first time these important court elements had been upgraded since they were built in the 1970s.

The Squash Committee took this big decision with remaining uncertainty about how we should proceed with a Third Court, but mindful of the need to maintain a high standard on our existing courts.

Huge boost for our teams

In September, as a new season began, once again we were pleased to announce that Redwither Ltd and, in particular Malcolm Williams (Big Mal), had agreed to provide generous sponsorship and continued support of all our teams in donating funds for match balls and new shirts.

A Fast & Furious (snowy) weekend

The Club held its Fast & Furious Christmas Tournament over the weekend - 8 / 9 December.

Despite some heavy snow in the area, which did affect some members getting up to the Club, around 20 players of all ages and ability enjoyed some excellent competition. Overall, the competition was won by Jonathan Davies, with Hannah Davies in second place.

2017 World Championships

The 2017 World Squash Championships were held in Manchester (11 - 16 December) and our local favourite, Tesni Evans, did rather well.

END OF SEASON REPORT (MAY 2017)

All teams in their respective leagues have had a solid second half of the season which shows the strength of team squash at the Club. Apart from a few occasions when work commitments or illness have put the team Captains in a state of panic, teams have been very consistent.

North East Wales League
First Team – Finished the season comfortably in the top half of the First Division table.
Second Team – Missed out on the Division Two championship by just one point but went on to win the Plate Final in a convincing 5-0 against Buckley. This team was well marshalled by John (Jonald Trump) Williams throughout the season and fully deserved promotion to the top league next season. Third Team – Nick Carlton took over the Captain's reins from Tom Trueman, who managed to enrol himself onto a college course on Tuesday evenings (not good planning) !
Nick took the opportunity to introduce a number of players experienced & inexperienced (at Team Squash) into the side and they very nearly won promotion to the Second Division. It all looks good for next season !

North West Counties Squash League
First Team – They had a great season winning the Second Division West region league. The Team led by Darren Lee was very consistent all season, a major factor in winning the league.
Second Team – They finished mid-table in the same Division as our First Team and could have been challenging for the top spot with the First Team had it not been for a few injuries and work issues affecting the team selection.
Third Team – An excellent season, winning promotion to the Third Division by a considerable margin. They missed out on the overall League Championship at the Semi Final stage. It's going to be a lot tougher for all concerned next season.

Congratulations to all the players who turn out week in week out, for the commitment you all put in into representing the Squash Club.

NW Second Team - May 2017

MID SEASON REPORT - DECEMBER 2016

North East Wales League

Our First Team finished in Second place over the first half in Division One, having had a 13 point penalty deduction for fielding a junior player late in the season (where is the encouragement ?). This cost us the League title, but never mind, these trivial matters have a habit of rebounding.

The Seconds just managed to avoid relegation from Division Two, on the last game of the season thanks to the management skills of Team Captain, John Wiliams. Quite why and how this team found itself in such a precarious position is a mystery as they have a strong side. Lets hope they can rectify matters in the second half.

The Third Team, with new Captain Nick Carlton (taking over from Tom Trueman) organising very efficiently, had a good season and consolidated their position in Division Three. On various occasions, three juniors were introduced into the Team - Thomas Koscinski, Josh Davies and (9 year old) Lewis Davies and all had very creditable wins to their names. We hope that these juniors will be challenging for place in the Second Team next season, so watch out!!

North West Counties League

With three teams in the Leagues, two in Division 2 & one in Division 3, the season was always going to be tough, with the quality of opposing teams as well as player availability, but overall these Teams have all performed better than expected.

The First Team finished at Christmas in second place with old heads, Jonathon Davies & Darren Lee, showing the youngsters, Hannah, John & Jack, how it's done with the benefit of their experience in playing (and drinking) throughout the first half.

The Seconds finished comfortably in mid table - a very good performance considering the number of times some of the higher end players were not available, either due to injury or work commitments.
One very bright point this first half came with the rising star, in young Huw Williams (age 16), joining the Club - Huw is a quality player who will benefit both the Club and his own development in this League.

Our Third Team are sitting proudly on top of Division 4, not unexpected as the Team are very experienced 2nd & 3rd Division players. The overall age of our sides does need to come down, however, so we need to encourage some of our younger players like Josh & Thomas to come through.
Special mention and thanks to Richard Ackerley, Kev Jones, Aled Goddard & Tom Bird who have all been called into the side last minute and performed admirably. Great team spirit.

Congratulations to all the players who have played team squash this 1st half and may it continue into 2017.

Superb start for Third Team

Our NWCSL Third Team have maintained a 100% record so far this season; it's the first season we've put out a Third Team in these Leagues.
